David Olivier is the Principal[2], and the school is divided into a junior school (years 7-10) and a senior school (years 11-13).
Like many Catholic schools in New Zealand, St Peter's has put a great deal of emphasis on developing leadership skills in its students. This is line with the school's desire to provide its students with a holistic education based on service towards others.
.
Students and teachers alike are divided into four houses, named after the first four bishops or archbishops of Wellington. The houses compete annually for the House Shield, involving many house led competitions, like Parables (a short drama based on a Biblical parable), House Kapa Haka, House Singing and so on, as well as serving an organisational purpose for the students:
St Peter's Rugby Union 1st XV plays traditional matches against four other Catholic Schools. The schools are: St John's College, Hastings; Francis Douglas Memorial College, New Plymouth; Cullinane College, Wanganui (formerly St Augustines); and Chanel College, Masterton. Traditional games are played on an annual basis, with home and away legs alternating.
Fixtures against St. John's have proved tough over the years. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, however, a very strong St Peter's team gained ascendancy in the tie. The tie against Chanel College is dominated by St Peter's.
In recent years St Peter's has declined to send a 1st XV to Masterton, sending instead an under 16 team, due to the non-competitiveness of Chanel College.
Along with Rugby, Hockey and Football are major winter sports. With the unbeaten First XI Football team (2009 season), and the First XI Hockey who won the Manawatu Schools Championship last year.
